ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr. Bunmi Oyinsan is a distinguished writer, educator, and filmmaker whose work bridges literature, gender studies, and African cultural expression. Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, she holds an MA in Literature and Gender from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and earned a PhD in Gender/Women/Film Studies from York University, Canada. Her doctoral research explored African women’s storytelling traditions and orature.

A prolific author, Dr. Oyinsan has published several novels for adults and young readers, along with a growing catalogue of illustrated children’s books. Her fiction often centers on strong, intergenerational female characters, showcasing women not as victims but as active shapers of their destinies, an approach evident in her acclaimed novel Three Women, which explores themes of agency, tradition, and cultural continuity.

Her debut novel, Silhouette, was adapted into the Nigerian television series Dreams. She has also written notable TV scripts such as Owuro Lojo and Aditulaye Toyosi, both aired on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). Beyond fiction, she has written and directed for the stage and radio, edited literary anthologies, and contributed short stories to journals and collections.

Dr. Oyinsan is also the creator and host of Sankofa Pan African Series, a YouTube platform dedicated to reshaping the global narrative about Africa through African-centered biographies and historical storytelling.

Her commitment to education and empowerment led her to co-found schools for underserved communities and establish the Equality Through Education Foundation, which promotes not just academic success but also leadership and vocational skills.

A longtime member of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), she played a key role in establishing its Lagos chapter and continues to support emerging voices in literature and the arts.

Dr. Oyinsan’s recent work includes her novel A Ladder of Bones, featured at literary events such as the Tartan Turban Readings, where she engages audiences in conversations around African identity, spirituality, and storytelling.
